• Indigenous Self-Care in Indigenous Education: Developing an Institutional Wellness Toolkit
Feb 06, 2025 | Indigenous Institutes Consortium (IIC)

In 2022, the Indigenous Institutes Consortium (IIC) launched a community-driven research initiative focused on culturally rooted well-being for post-secondary learners.

Collaborating with seven of Ontario’s nine Indigenous community-authorized and land-based post-secondary institutions (Indigenous Institutes, or IIs), the project team connected with current students, graduates, faculty, and subject matter specialists to examine and document wellness indicators, frameworks, policies, programs, interventions, and supports derived from the distinct worldviews, knowledge systems, and values of Ontario’s Indigenous nations and communities.

Building on previous efforts at the IIs and IIC, the study’s findings and recommendations mark the initial stage of a long-term initiative, with this toolkit serving as a key element. Through this resource, Indigenous Institutes are supported in designing their own tailored, institution-specific learner self-care toolkit, or “personal wellness bundle,” utilizing innovative delivery methods to effectively engage Indigenous students in college, university, and skilled trades programs.
