The University of Calgary’s Campus Mental Health Strategy strives to create a culture where its students learn and talk about mental health and well-being and are able to flourish.
Building this, they developed an embedded certificate in Mental Well-being and Resilience, which is a first among Canadian post-secondaries. This certificate provides a unique program that explores mental health from multiple perspectives and in various modalities, the certificate is designed with flexibility and diversity in mind with participants receiving individualized and interdisciplinary learning both in and outside the classroom. Those enrolled in this university-level certificate develop a research-informed, multidisciplinary understanding of mental wellbeing through six courses. Students develop resilience skills to support their own wellbeing, as well as knowledge to better support others. In the experiential learning-based capstone, students engage with the campus community to complete a mental health-related project. Certificate graduates become mental health champions who promote healthy coping and resilience in others and contribute to building a strong workplace and community.
