How to Build a Mental Health Stepped Care Model

Created by the Education Advisory Board (EAB), this guide will assist you in developing a robust mental health stepped care model for your institution.

A stepped care model for campus mental health services offers a variety of mental health support options for students, enabling them to increase or decrease the intensity of care as required. Individual therapy is just one option within a much broader range of services, often online resources and off-campus supports.

This guide and template showcase Calvin University’s stepped care model as an example, highlighting the success they experienced in the first year of implementation. Additional examples and feedback from other universities currently using a stepped care model are provided, highlighting what has been effective for them.
